Regarding Mt. Fuji Mountain Huts |
Mountain huts on Mt. Fuji were originally built as emergency shelters and exist to this day as shelters from harsh mountain conditions. All huts offer simple dorm style accommodation. Because the mission of the huts is to provide safety and shelter to as many hikers as possible, it is not possible to pay for extra space. The huts provide the essential shelter and food you need to reach Mt. Fuji's summit.
It is important to note that huts on Mt. Fuji, including Yamaguchiya, do not provide a heated dry room for drying out wet gear. Be sure to climb with spare, dry clothes kept in dry bags so you will have a change of clothes in the event you show up at the mountain hut in wet weather. |

Trail Maps |
Yamaguchiya mountain hut is located at the summit of Mt. Fuji at 3,776m/12,388ft and accessed from either the Subaru Line 5th station (Yoshida Trail) or Subashiri 5th station (Subashiri Trail). To reach your hut by 4pm it is recommended that you leave the 5th station by 7am - 8am.
The Yoshida trail merges with the Subashiri trail from the 8th station. Take care to follow the correct trail on your descent; the Yoshida descending trail and Subashiri descending trail split at the Shita Edoya hut junction, noted on the map below. We recommend you download a Mt. Fuji trail map on the website here. This trail map can be viewed in airplane mode, with your current location displayed on the map using GPS satellites.

How to get to the Subashiri trail head
See the Google Maps link to the Subashiri 5th station (trail head) here. Note that driving up to the Subashiri 5th station in private vehicles is prohibited during the entire climbing season from July 10-September 10. If you're driving your own vehicle, you will need to use the parking lot here and take one of the shuttle buses up to the Subashiri 5th Station. Alternatively, you can take a taxi from this parking lot up the road. The shuttle bus is around ¥1,500 per person, the taxi is around ¥4,000 and can fit 4-5 people (pricing and capacity subject to change). Depending on the day and season, there may be no taxis available when you arrive.
There are also regular buses that go up to the Subashiri trail from Gotemba Train station. However, bus departure times and prices are only shown in obscure, complicated PDF's in Japanese online. If you can't figure out the bus, call the information center here and they can probably help out.

Climbing Permit
There is an entry fee payment of ¥4,000 per person required to obtain a permit to climb Mt. Fuji. The easiest option is to obtain your Mt. Fuji climbing entry permit online:

If this is a concern to you, the climbing permit can also be obtained on the day of your climb at the 5th station. Climbers with a mountain hut reservation are guaranteed access to a permit to climb Mt. Fuji, granted they come prepared with the proper equipment and knowledge for the high altitude ascent of Mt. Fuji.
