Regarding Mt. Fuji Mountain Huts

Mountain huts on Mt. Fuji were originally built as emergency shelters and exist to this day as shelters from harsh mountain conditions. All huts offer simple dorm style accommodation. Because the mission of the huts is to provide safety and shelter to as many hikers as possible, it is not possible to pay for extra space. The huts provide the essential shelter and food you need to reach Mt. Fuji's summit.

It is important to note that huts on Mt. Fuji, including this hut, do not provide a heated dry room for drying out wet gear. Be sure to climb with spare, dry clothes kept in dry bags so you will have a change of clothes in the event you show up at the mountain hut in wet weather.

House Rules

Huts on Mt.Fuji are a unique cultural experience. Here are a few tips for a smooth trip.

Arrive by 6pm to ensure your dinner does not go to waste! It is recommended to leave the Subashiri 5th station by 4pm at the latest.

Pay careful attention to where you should take off your shoes.

There are NO dry rooms.

There are NO trash cans. All personal trash must be packed out and disposed of off the mountain.

Sleeping Quarters

Futon with sleeping bags and pillows are provided by the mountain hut.
The sleeping quarters have bunk beds with each level fitting up to 10 people.
Going to the bathroom can be a challenge involving stepping over other guests and climbing down the bunk bed ladders. Be careful!
Multiple climbing parties will sleep in the same room. We recommend bringing ear plugs!

Hut Facilities

Western style toilets located in a separate outhouse, about 10m/30ft from the building.
There are no trash cans. All personal trash must be packed out and disposed of off the mountain.
There is NO dry room!

Food

Dinner:
Japanese curry rice with a couple of side dishes such as pickled vegetables and salad. Japanese green tea or water is served with dinner.

Breakfast:
For guests attempting to watch the sunrise from the summit, breakfast is given as a packed "bento" box . This can be carried with you to eat on your way to or at the summit. Two onigiri with pickled vegetables and a couple of sausages are included in the bento box.

Vegetarian

A vegetarian curry is available upon request for dinner. Rice with assorted vegetables is served for breakfast. Vegetarian requests can be made within the booking form.

Vegan, Halal and gluten free options are not available.

Osada Sanso mountain hut is located at the new 6th station on the Subashiri trail at 2,450m/8,038ft and accessed from the Subashiri trail 5th station. To reach your hut by 6pm it is recommended that you leave the Subashiri 5th station by 4pm at the latest.

How to get to the Subashiri Trailhead

See the Google Maps link to the Subashiri 5th station (trail head) here. Note that driving up to the Subashiri 5th station in private vehicles is prohibited during the entire climbing season from July 10-September 10. If you're driving your own vehicle, you will need to use the parking lot here and take one of the shuttle buses up to the Subashiri 5th Station. Alternatively, you can take a taxi from this parking lot up the road. The shuttle bus is around ¥1,500 per person, the taxi is around ¥4,000 and can fit 4-5 people (pricing and capacity subject to change). Depending on the day and season, there may be no taxis available when you arrive.

There are also regular buses that go up to the Subashiri trail from Gotemba Train station. However, bus departure times and prices are only shown in obscure, complicated PDF's in Japanese online. If you can't figure out the bus, call the information center here and they can probably help out.

Climbing Permit

There is an entry fee payment of ¥4,000 per person required to obtain a permit to climb Mt. Fuji. The easiest option is to obtain your Mt. Fuji climbing entry permit through the “Shizuoka Prefecture Fuji Climbing Pre-registration System” here. By pre-registering and completing payment online for your climbing permit, you won’t need to waste time on the day of your climb at the trail head.

Note that if travel plans change or weather disrupts your planned climbing date, you’ll need to apply for a new date or refund through the Pre-registration system.

Where can I store extra luggage?

We understand that you may have extra luggage that you do not want to take on your journey up Mt. Fuji.

Options for luggage storage include, coin lockers at Shinjuku or Kawaguchiko train stations, hotel baggage storage services, or sending by 'takkyubin' (postal service) to your next destination. We highly recommend using 'Takkyubin' luggage delivery services, as it is extremely cheap, efficient and reliable, with pricing at around ¥2,000 for next day shipping for check-in sized baggage. Are private rooms available?

No, private rooms are not available at at this hut.

Is there a vegetarian meal option?

Yes, a vegetarian option is provided for both dinner and breakfast. Vegan, Halal and gluten free options are not available.
