Regarding Mt. Fuji Mountain Huts

Mountain huts on Mt. Fuji were originally built as emergency shelters and exist to this day as shelters from harsh mountain conditions. All huts offer simple dorm style accommodation. Because the mission of the huts is to provide safety and shelter to as many hikers as possible, it is not possible to pay for extra space. The huts provide the essential shelter and food you need to reach Mt. Fuji's summit.

It is important to note that huts on Mt. Fuji, including Munatsuki Sanso, do not provide a heated dry room for drying out wet gear. Be sure to climb with spare, dry clothes kept in dry bags so you will have a change of clothes in the event you show up at the mountain hut in wet weather.

House Rules

Huts on Mt.Fuji are a unique cultural experience. Here are a few tips for a smooth trip.

Arrive by 7pm to ensure you can check in and your dinner does not go to waste! It is recommended to leave 5th station between 11am and noon.

Dinner (curry rice) is served until 7pm (Dining room will close at 7:30pm).

Pay careful attention to where you should take off your shoes.

There are western-style toilets free to use for staying guests. No use of toilets after checking out.

Make sure to bring a change of clothes. If you are wet from rain, you may not be able to enter the sleeping area.

There are NO dry rooms.

There are NO trash cans. All personal trash must be packed out and disposed of off the mountain. Throwing trash in the toilets is strictly forbidden.

No YouTube filming or live streaming inside the facility.

Sleeping Quarters

Sleeping mats and sleeping bags are provided by the mountain hut.
Going to the bathroom can be a challenge involving stepping over other guests. Be careful!
Multiple climbing parties will sleep in the same room. We recommend bringing ear plugs!

Hut Facilities

Western-style toilets, free to use for staying guests.
There are no trash cans. All personal trash must be packed out and disposed of off the mountain. No throwing trash in the toilets!

Food

Dinner:
Japanese Curry rice with some pickled vegetables is served with Japanese green tea. Dinner is served in order of arrival, until 7pm.

Breakfast:
A couple of sweet breads and cafe au lait.

Vegetarian

A vegetarian curry is available upon request for dinner. Sweet breads and cafe au lait is served for breakfast. Vegetarian requests can be made within the booking form.

Vegan, Halal, and gluten-free options are not available.

Trail Maps

Munatsuki Sanso mountain hut is located at the 9.5th station of Fujinomiya Trail at 3,590m/11,778ft and accessed from the Fujinomiya 5th station (Fujinomiya Trail). To reach your hut by 7pm it is recommended that you leave the 5th station between 11am and noon.

The Fujinomiya trail is the shortest and most direct route to the summit of Mt. Fuji, making it a popular choice for climbers who want to reach the top with the least amount of distance. The trail starts on the south side of Mt. Fuji in Shizuoka Prefecture at the highest elevation of any Mt. Fuji trail head, beginning at 2,400m.

The Fujinomiya trail is a great choice if you are traveling to Kyoto or Osaka before or after your climb, as it is the closest and most easily accessed trail from the Kansai region.

While it can be slightly busier than the Subashiri or Gotemba trails, the Fujinomiya trail is an excellent option for climbers looking for the most efficient route to the summit and crater rim of Mt. Fuji.

How to get to the Fujinomiya trail head

Note that driving up to the Fujinomiya 5th station in private vehicles is prohibited during the entire climbing season from July 10-September 10. If you're driving your own vehicle, you will need to use the parking lot here and take one of the shuttle buses up to the Fujinomiya 5th Station.

There are also public buses that go up to the Fujinomiya 5th station departing from Shin Fuji station (bullet train access) and Fujinomiya train station. The public bus will only run during the climbing season from July 10-September 10.

Climbing Permit

There is an entry fee payment of ¥4,000 per person required to obtain a permit to climb Mt. Fuji. The easiest option is to obtain your Mt. Fuji climbing entry permit online:

By pre-registering and completing payment online for your climbing permit, you won’t need to waste time on the day of your climb at the trail head.

Note that if travel plans change or weather disrupts your planned climbing date, refunds may not be available for your climbing permit. If this is a concern to you, the climbing permit can also be obtained on the day of your climb at the 5th station. Climbers with a mountain hut reservation are guaranteed access to a permit to climb Mt. Fuji, granted they come prepared with the proper equipment and knowledge for the high altitude ascent of Mt. Fuji.

Where can I store extra luggage?

We understand that you may have extra luggage that you do not want to take on your journey up Mt. Fuji.

Options for luggage storage include, coin lockers at Shinjuku train station, hotel baggage storage services, or sending by 'takkyubin' (postal service) to your next destination. We highly recommend using 'Takkyubin' luggage delivery services, as it is extremely cheap, efficient and reliable, with pricing at around ¥2,000 for next day shipping for check-in sized baggage. Are private rooms available?

Private rooms are not available at Munatsuki Sanso.

Is there a vegetarian meal option?

Yes, vegetarian options are available for dinner and breakfast. Vegan, Halal, and gluten-free options are not available.
