Clear information + culturally relevant advice = good, safe climbs

Japan Mountain Huts started as a project of Fuji Mountain Guides when we kept on hearing from our hut friends about how much trouble it was to host non-Japanese guests who were staying in their huts. It was so much trouble for them that the huts would often refuse to take reservations from international visitors simply because of the differences in communication and cultural expectations seemed insurmountable.

Specializing in making climbs fun and approachable since 2007, the FMG team here at Tokyo HQ started to wonder if there was a way that we could help bridge the gap between foreign visitors and hut operators. What if we could help facilitate clear communication between the two parties? Would the huts then be interested in accepting more reservations from international visitors?

We experimented with an English speaking hut reservation in 2015, with a full service English help desk and real-time booking system that would help English speaking climbers understand the needs, requirements, and expectations of the huts. And, to our delight, both the huts and climbers were happy. Huts received guests who were culturally sensitive and prepared to be good visitors, and visitors were able to easily make a reservation and understand how they could be good guests. After all, no one wants to be a bad guest.

We're honored that both the huts and climbers have entrusted Japan Mountain Huts with their Fuji Hut reservation. Since we've been guiding on Mt. Fuji since 2007, we know the mountain really well, and are stoked to be able to provide clear and accurate information to aspiring climbers.

We wish you a safe climb and a pleasant stay with one of our mountain hut partners!
